Lot et Garonne"A blessed corner of South West France....like an unspoilt Tuscany or Provence" Sam Taylor, The Observer 21st January 2001 The department of Lot et Garonne in the Aquitaine region of South West France is an area of rolling hills, fertile valleys and wild woodland. It is notably a farming region, famed throughout France for its produce. Its climate of temperate winters and hot summers and its clean air is probably largly responsible for such productivity. It is known especially for fruit growing, particularly plums, the famous Agen prunes, strawberries and melons. Its vineyards produce good quality wines, Buzet and Duras perhaps being the best known. A drive through the unspoilt countryside will reveal something to see round practically ever corner. There are the numerous Bastides, relics from the past in the form of medieval fortified villages, chateaux large and small in varying states of repair, ancient underground caves and vineyards offering an infinite variety of wines, Armagnacs and Eau de vies for sale. It may have a reputation for peaceful good living but the region abounds with activities to suit all ages and tastes. For the active there is golf, walking, cycling, horseriding, canoeing, fishing and swimming to name but a few. During the summer months there are weekly markets in most villages, many local festivals and open-air concerts and a host of delightful but inexpensive restuarants, many offering local specialities. Or you may just want to sit by the pool with a good book and enjoy the wonderful sunshine. Lot et Garonne is an ideal location for exploring further afield. Bordeaux and Toulouse are both about an hours drive
away whilst the Mediterranean coast can be reached in 3 hours and the Atlantic coast in 2.
The pyrenees if you fancy a bit of fresh mountain air are only a couple of hours away by car.
